Community honors Dr. King with march through downtown Rochester

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - School children, civil rights leaders and local politicians marched with several hundred others through downtown Rochester Monday afternoon in commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The march started around 12:30 p.m. at the Government Center rotunda and concluded about 30 minutes later at the Rochester Civic Theatre.

Many of the marchers waved signs reading "I Have a Dream," the lasting words of Dr. King's historic 1963 speech, and "Black Lives Matter," a recent rallying cry for millions of protesters across the country.

Earlier events included a celebration service Sunday at the Rochester Community Baptist Church and a breakfast Monday morning at the DoubleTree Hotel.

Dr. King made a number of visits to Minnesota in his lifetime to talk about civil rights and the Vietnam War. MPR News reports his final visit to the state was in 1967, a year before he was assassinated in Tennessee.
