City Council clears way for Rochesterfest to be held at Soldiers Field

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - Rochesterfest will be held at Soldiers Field Park for the foreseeable future.

The City Council approved a proposal Monday night to make $135,000 in permanent electrical upgrades to the park. The annual festival was forced to move from its previous spot in front of the Mayo Civic Center because of an upcoming renovation project.

"The value in the permanent upgrade is that it allows us to program Soldiers Field for community events other than Rochesterfest," City Council President Randy Staver told the Med City Beat. "The council felt this would be a good investment in enhancing the use of this very key piece of recreational parkland."

The council had been considering a plan to make temporary electric upgrades to the park, and use the new location on a year-to-year trial basis. But Staver said the temporary solution would have cost $60,000 upfront, with additional costs accruing each year after.

"The temporary solution could therefore exceed the cost of the more permanent solution within just a few years," said Staver.

The Rochester Park Board unanimously voted in early December to move Rochesterfest to Soldiers Field.
