(THE MED CITY BEAT) - The Olmsted County Board approved an $11.3 million expansion of the Government Center on Tuesday.

The project includes a new weapons screening area on the second floor of the Government Center. KAAL-TV reports the front doors near the information center will be extended toward the parking lot to make room for the addition.

Kraus Anderson, a Minneapolis-based construction company with an office in Rochester, expects to begin work on the project within the next few weeks.

The board also ordered county staff to begin planning for another expansion. KROC-AM reports a $9 million plan to build two unfurnished floors above the Law Enforcement Center is expected to go up for bidding later this year.
