Report: Mayo Clinic has one of the best overall diets

(THE MED CITY) - The Mayo Clinic Diet is the third best overall diet on the market, according to a study by U.S. News & World Report.

The DASH Diet, which was developed to lower blood pressure without medication, was named the best overall diet for the fifth consecutive year. The Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes diet finished second.

A panel of leading health experts evaluated 35 plans on a range of levels, from their heart healthiness to their likelihood to help you lose weight. To be top-rated, the report says, a diet had to be relatively easy to follow, nutritious, safe, effective for weight loss and protective against diabetes and heart disease.

The Mayo Clinic Diet scored particularly high in nutrition, safety and its ability to prevent or treat diabetes and heart disease. The only drawbacks of the plan, experts say, is the plan takes a relatively large amount of work and is somewhat pricey.

According to Mayo's website, the diet is based on a custom Healthy Weight Pyramid, which focuses on generous amounts of healthy foods that contain a small number of calories in a large volume of food, such as fruits and vegetables. In addition to healthy eating, the diet encourages users to get at least 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise every day.

Earlier in the year, U.S. News & World Report ranked the Mayo Clinic in Rochester as the nation's top hospital for the first time ever.
