Authorities ID man killed in Olmsted County quarry incident

Authorities have identified the man killed in Thursday's accident at a gravel pit mining operation near Stewartville as Kiel Warnken, 28, of Rochester.

First responders were called to the 2600 block of County Road 6 SW in High Forest Township just before 11 a.m. They tried for about a half hour to resuscitate Warnken but were unsuccessful.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a preliminary investigation by the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office, Warnken was struggling to close the gate of his dump truck, so he asked another driver to bump the back of the vehicle.

Warnken somehow got caught between the two trucks as the second driver, a 27-year-old coworker, attempted to close the gate.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday morning. Since the incident happened at a work site, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified.

"This affects a lot of people," said Capt. Scott Behrns of the sheriff's office. "Our condolences go out to everyone involved."
