Man facing criminal charges after fatal crash in SE Rochester
A woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday night in southeast Rochester.
The crash happened around 10:15 p.m. at the intersection of 13th Street and 8th Avenue SE. The woman, identified as Kayla Marie Cunningham, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, Cunningham was living in the area and studying at the Mayo School of Health Sciences. She was originally from South Dakota.
The driver of the second vehicle, Akili Nelson Scott, 20, and several other passengers fled the scene on foot after the crash. Police later located Scott at a home on 8 1/2 Street SE. He is expected to face criminal charges.
Alcohol and speed were involved in the crash, notes the report. The other passengers were questioned by authorities but not arrested.
Court records show Scott has been convicted multiple times over the past couple years for speeding and driving on a suspended license.
