(THE MED CITY BEAT) - A Rochester man's blood alcohol content level was nearly three times the legal limit when he crashed into a gas meter Tuesday morning, according to police.

The crashed happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of 2nd Street SE. The vehicle struck two houses and a gas main, which caused an "explosive atmosphere" in one of the homes. Six homes were evacuated for about two hours as a precaution.

The driver of the pickup truck, 25-year-old Aurelio Romero, fled the scene following the crash. He was located about an hour later in the 800 block of East Center Street. He was arrested for DWI after his BAC level registered at 0.22. He has also been charged with hit and run.

A passenger in the vehicle did not leave the scene and was not arrested.

Damage to the most affected home is estimated around $10,000. An individual living in the house will stay with a neighbor until the home is habitable again.
