(THE MED CITY BEAT) - A motorcyclist was hospitalized Saturday night with serious injuries following a crash on Highway 52 in northwest Rochester.

The incident happened around 7:45 p.m. near the 55th Street exit.

The man, identified as 35-year-old Joshua Streiff of Rochester, was traveling southbound on the highway when he rear-ended an SUV, says a report by the State Patrol. The driver of the SUV was not injured.

Streiff, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Saint Marys hospital with serious injuries. Authorities believe he had been drinking.

Southbound lanes of Highway 52 between 65th St and 55th St NW were shut down for about an hour.

That is the highest number of rider deaths at this point in the riding season since 1994, the earliest date such records are available.

There are more than 236,000 registered motorcycles and more than 414,000 licensed operators in Minnesota.
