Rochester man tricked out of $500 in iPhone deal gone bad

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - A man trying to purchase an iPhone 6 was tricked out of nearly $500 Monday night at University Square in Rochester.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in the common area outside Chester's restaurant. The man, 24, told officers that he arranged to meet the suspected thief through a Craigslist advertisement.

At first, the deal appeared to be going smoothly. The suspect and victim swapped the phone for the $480 in cash, police said.

But before walking away, the suspect told the victim he needed the phone one more time.  According to the police report, he told the victim that there was a contact — or some other piece of information — that he needed before selling the phone.

As soon as the suspect got the phone back, he reportedly took off running. The victim was only able to follow the man for a short distance.

The victim said the suspect was a black male — no other description was given. He may have been accompanied by another man, who was standing from a distance, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Rochester & Olmsted County at 1-800-222-TIPS. You can remain anonymous.
