Rochester woman picks up hitchhiker — comes to regret the decision
(THE MED CITY BEAT) - A Rochester woman was the victim of an attempted carjacking Tuesday evening.
According to a police report, the 23-year-old woman was leaving the People's Food Coop downtown when a stranger asked for a ride to Winona.
The hitchhiker, later identified as 39-year-old Ann Kittle of Winona, reportedly offered $300 for the ride. The victim told Kittle that Winona was too far but that she could drive her somewhere in town.
They ended up driving to the Crossroads Shopping Center off South Broadway. When the victim stopped the car, Kittle unsuccessfully tried to take the car key out of the ignition.
"Get the hell out of the car, bitch," she reportedly told the victim.
Kittle then got out of the vehicle and forced the victim out of the driver's seat. She sprayed the victim at least twice in the face with hairspray, notes the report.
Fortunately for the victim, criminals are not always the smartest bunch. Police said Kittle couldn't figure out how to start the vehicle (it wasn't in park).
Kittle left the scene on foot but was found by officers a short time later in the nearby Hy-Vee parking lot. She faces charges of attempted robbery.
Police said several people witnessed the altercation between Kittle and the victim, but no one intervened.
