Sheriff's office releases identity of deceased inmate (updated)

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - A female detainee who died in police custody last week was identified Wednesday morning.

The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office said Sheila Baier, 55 of Brook Park, was found dead in her cell at the Adult Detention Center on May 28. The medical examiner's office has preliminary determined the cause of death to be a suicide by hanging.

Sheriff Kevin Torgerson said at a news conference Wednesday morning that the detention staff was doing the required checks every 30 minutes. He said it's hard to stop someone who is predetermined to take his or her own life.

"The opportunity presented itself to her and she took advantage of it," said Torgerson.

The sheriff's office worked closely with the family throughout the investigation, Torgerson said. Baier had family spread across the country, including about 10 children.

She was in custody on a misdemeanor warrant. Her bail was set at $100.

The sheriff's office said it has been at least a few years since the last time a detainee died at the detention center. All detainees with known mental illnesses are provided treatment.
