(THE MED CITY BEAT) - Rochester is one of the top 20 best places in the country for tech jobs, according to a new report by the personal finance website NerdWallet.

Researchers analyzed the nation’s 370 largest metropolitan areas to find the best spots for tech-savy workers. Rochester finished no. 19, one spot behind the Twin Cities metro. To no one's surprise, Silicon Valley topped the list.

The report notes that the Rochester metro has 36.5 tech employees for every 1,000 workers, about twice the national average. The average tech job pays about $84,516/year locally, compared to a national mean of just under $70,500.

"The most successful tech cities are home to big companies or are places that encourage startups through accelerator programs and venture capital investment," notes the report.

The fact that Rochester's median rent is $763 per month — putting it in the bottom half of the top 100 — helped propel the city over regional competitors like Des Moines and Madison, both of which had higher rates of tech workers but also higher rents.
