Rochester man swarmed by police while trying to shoot wasp nests

A man was briefly surrounded by police over the weekend following a report of shots fired outside a Rochester apartment complex. However, it turned out the man was just firing airsoft pellets at wasp nests.

Police responded around 6:30 a.m. Sunday to Meadow Park Apartments, located in the 400 block of 14th Street SE. When officers arrived, they noticed a man holding what appeared to be a semiautomatic handgun.

Officers drew their weapons and ordered the man to drop his gun. The man — identified as a 55-year-old property maintenance worker — received a verbal warning but was not cited. When asked why he chose to shoot at the nests, he said it was "more fun" than using a spray.

While the incident may have been innocent in its intentions, neighbors did have cause for concern. Gunshots were reported outside the building two separate nights earlier this month.
