School referendum would cost average homeowner about $10-15 per month
Rochester voters will be asked this fall whether they want to contribute an additional $9.6 million per year toward the school district's operating expenses.
The Rochester School board on Tuesday signed off on a tax levy override referendum that will appear on ballots Nov. 3.

If the measure is approved by voters, the district will be able to maintain current spending levels for the next five years.
But if voters reject the referendum, the district would have to make 5 percent across-the-board spending cuts — the equivalent of about 114 full-time positions — to offset a $3.8 million deficit for the 2016-17 school year.
The last time the district held a referendum was in 2010. It failed, forcing the district to make $5 million in cuts.
Here's a look at what a successful referendum would cost the average property owner:
- $150,000 home — increase of $137.51 ($11.46/month)
- $200,000 home — increase of $183.35 ($15.28/month)
- $250,000 home — increase of $229.19 ($19.10/month)
- $300,000 home — increase of $275.03 ($22.92/month)
