Former University Village Inn razed to make way for new apartment building

Crews worked this week to tear down the former University Village Inn in downtown Rochester in preparation for a new multi-use apartment complex.

The property is located at the intersection of Second Street and Second Avenue SW next to the People's Food Co-op.

Plans call for a five-story building with commercial space at the ground level and 84 apartments in the upper floors. Residential units will be a mix of studios, one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms.

"501 on First" will also include a shared fitness room, private storage units for rent and a rooftop patio with an adjacent community room.

The developer was awarded a $1.7 million incentive package in April. Construction is expected to be completed sometime next year.
