Not over yet: 7 summer events still to come in the Rochester area

The sun may be setting on summer, but there are plenty of big events still to come. Here's a look at some of the notable ones in our area:

Thursdays on First and 3rd

One of Rochester’s most iconic events, the Thursdays on First and 3rd Summer Market and Music Festival wraps up at the end of the month. The free event has over 100 street vendors featuring everything from arts and crafts to food, drinks, and entertainment. Visitors can catch live music from local performers on two different stages at 5 and 7 p.m.

Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days

Dates: Aug. 14-16

With premier antiques, art, and flea market, the Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days is one of the top twelve antique shows in the Midwest. With over a thousand booths of local goods, visitors can take in vintage-inspired contemporary art, high quality antiques, and foods from local vendors.

Outdoor concert series

Dates: Aug. 16 & 23

This summer's Down by the Riverside concert series is going out with a bang. First, the energetic pop group Lucius will take the stage on Aug. 16 (full preview here). Then a week later, the iconic folk-rock band America — with hits like “A Horse with No Name," “Ventura Highway" and “Sister Golden Hair" — will perform the season finale at Mayo Park. The free outdoor shows start at 7 p.m.

Berne Wood Fired Pizza and Summer Concert Series

Dates: Aug. 19 & 26

Little town, big flavor: that’s what Berne (20 minutes NW of Rochester) has to offer with its Wood Fired Pizza and Summer Concert Series. From 5-8 p.m. every Wednesday night through August, guests are welcome to come enjoy wood-fired pizza picnic style and serenaded by that week’s musical act. Soda, water, ice cream, and chips are also sold on the grounds. This event is held as a fundraiser for the Zwingli United Church of Christ in Berne, and all profits go to the church and its chosen charities.

Pizza night on the farm

Date: Aug. 21

Just 20 miles southwest of Rochester you can find the Red Barn Learning Farm, where kids can enjoy jumping on straw bales, driving the pedal tractors, picking their own vegetables and meeting a variety of barnyard animals. In addition to the pizza night, several other special events are also planned at the barn throughout the summer.

Enjoy a movie under the stars

Date: Aug. 21

The History Center of Olmsted County will show the action-packed Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy for its final outdoor movie of the year. The film starts at dusk, which according to the data, should be just after 8 p.m. Tickets are $3 each; seniors and children under 12 get in free.

Rochester GreekFest
