Police: Man assaulted because his niece was wearing a Confederate flag hat

A 32-year-old Rochester man was allegedly assaulted by a large group of men after he defended his niece's decision to wear a hat with the confederate flag emblem.

The incident happened on Thursday, July 30 around 11:30 p.m. at Meadow Park Apartments in southeast Rochester.

According to a police report, the man was outside with his 13-year-old niece when a group of 8-10 black males approached them and began commenting that the hat was racist.

When the man told the group to leave her alone, he was reportedly knocked to the ground and beaten. He suffered minor injuries to his ribs and face, but declined emergency treatment.

The girl was not harmed. The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived.
