Arson suspected after fire causes over $50K in damage to home, four vehicles
A vehicle was set ablaze early Wednesday morning in a suspected case of arson.
The fire was reported around 1:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Foothills Lane SE in Rochester. According to the fire department, a neighbor noticed the flames and called 9-1-1.
One vehicle was completely destroyed, while three others were heavily damaged. The exterior of the home also caught on fire but was quickly put out by firefighters.
Assistant Fire Marshal Larry Mueller called the fire "suspicious" due to the timing and circumstances. A preliminary investigation revealed that there were no mechanical or electrical issues with the scorched vehicle.
Damage to the home and vehicles is estimated at more than $50,000.
A family with three children were home at the time of the fire but were not injured. The car belonged to a 22-year-old man; his relationship to the family is unclear.
The Rochester police and fire departments are working jointly on the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the arson hotline at: 1-800-723-2020 or by using this form.
