Work on 55th Street extension project set to begin this fall

The Olmsted County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a $32.8 million construction bid for the 55th Street extension and Broadway Avenue North reconstruction project.

The project, which was first outlined in 2007, will extend 55th Street eastward to provide a direct connection between US 52 and Broadway Avenue North. Plans also call for the reconstruction of Broadway to a four-lane roadway from the new 55th Street extension connection south to the Shopko area.

Hoffman Construction Company, of Black River Falls, Wis., plans to start work on the project this fall. However, the heavy lifting won't begin until sometime in 2016. Construction is expected to wrap up by September 2017.

The board on Tuesday also:

  • Voted to increase the county property tax levy by up to 5.2 percent in 2016. The board will vote on the final levy amount in December. If approved, the 5.2 percent bump would be the largest increase in property taxes since the start of the Great Recession (full story by the P-B).
  • Approved an $11 million plan to build a housing complex for the homeless at the site of the former Gage East Elementary school. Work on the 55-unit complex could begin as early as next month and be completed by the summer of 2016 (full story by KTTC).
