Mayo Clinic back on top in 2016-17 rankings of nation's top hospitals

For the second time in three years, Rochester's Mayo Clinic has been ranked the best hospital in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

The 2016-17 report, announced by the news organization on Tuesday, also put Mayo at the top of the list in eight medical specialities — more than any other health care provider in the country.

In total, the Rochester hospital system ranked nationally in 15 adult specialties and eight children's specialties. It also received a "high" rating in all nine common procedures and conditions examined for the report.

“We are honored to be recognized in this way, as it reflects the tremendous work of our staff every day in caring for our patients and their families,” said Dr. John Noseworthy, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. “This ranking is a testament to the dedication and excellence of all of our Mayo Clinic staff.”

To develop the list, U.S. News compared nearly 5,000 medical centers nationwide using criteria such as patient outcomes and adequacy of nurse staffing. Top spots in the rankings are highly sought after accolades and are used frequently by Mayo and others in marketing campaigns.

Changes to this year's algorithm included evaluations in four new areas, including colon and lung cancer surgery, as well as adjustments to factor in the socioeconomic mix of patients treated at various hospitals.

Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston dropped from No. 1 to No. 3 in the 2016-17 rankings. Cleveland Clinic jumped from No. 5 to No. 2.

Here's the rest of the top 10:

  1. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
  2. Cleveland Clinic
  3. Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
  4. Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
  5. UCLA Medical Center
