Mayo physician playing a big role for Team USA during World Cup of Hockey

A Rochester doctor is serving as the chief medical and safety officer for Team USA in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey in Toronto.

Dr. Michael Stuart, an orthopedic surgeon and co-director of the Division of Sports Medicine at Mayo Clinic, is overseeing the medical care for all players and staff of Team USA, working with NHL staff and other team physicians, and helping in the random drug testing of players, according to a news release.

“This is a very exciting opportunity,” said Dr. Stuart. “The World Cup brings together the best players in the world to represent their countries in a highly competitive tournament. These games will pique interest, increase exposure and grow the game of ice hockey.”

Stuart is no stranger to the national stage. He has already served three times as team physician of the U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team. Additionally, his three sons played in the NHL, and his daughter played NCAA Division I hockey.

Team USA will play a must-win game Tuesday night against Canada. It's the first time the NHL-sanctioned tournament has been held since 2004.
