Police: Man attempted to kill woman before turning gun on himself
A man was found dead Monday morning in northwest Rochester from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to police, his death followed a domestic dispute in which he shot a woman at her home.
The deceased man has been identified as Fereydoun Behnam, 71, of Red Wing. The identity of the 48-year-old female victim is being withheld due to the nature of the circumstances.
Any possible prior relationship will not be disclosed. However, police said Tuesday both are descendants of Iran. The woman moved to Rochester four years ago from Red Wing.
Officers and emergency personnel were called to the 2900 block of Ninth Ave. NW around 9:15 a.m. to a possible medical condition along the sidewalk. Witnesses reported seeing a female exiting her residence and collapsing
"The female was covered in blood and witnesses believed she had possibly been stabbed," says a news release from RPD. "It was later learned the victim was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to her chest and upper body."
While trying to assist the female victim, witnesses saw Behnam exit the same home and walk to a nearby intersection. When officers arrived, they found the man deceased in a parked vehicle.
The female victim was transported to Saint Marys Hospital and rushed into surgery. As of Tuesday, she was listed in stable but critical condition.
Authorities believe, based on their investigation, the attempted murder was premeditated. The P-B has a full timeline of events.
