Which of these prototypes would you like to see come to life in downtown Rochester?

Together the Rochester Downtown Alliance, Destination Medical Center Economic Development Agency and Rochester Art Center are pleased to announce next steps for PlaceMakers | Rochester Prototyping Festival.

More than 20 groups submitted prototype proposals around the theme of "Health and the Built Environment." Prototypes will be on public display at the prototyping festival from September 15-17 in downtown Rochester.

Why prototyping? Learn more here.

Proposed project ideas include innovative approaches to storm water treatment, light displays to communicate community health, artist-designed bike lanes, a healing garden and interactive musical instruments made out of PVC pipes.

The proposals are now under review by a panel of judges. Twelve projects will receive up to $2,000 in funding each and a space at the festival.

People's Choice Award

The public has the opportunity to select one of the proposals for a People's Choice Award. The winning proposal, decided by a popular vote, will be awarded one of the dozen available spaces for the event.

You can view the full list of proposals with project descriptions and renderings in the document below. Voting will run through July 4 at 11:59 p.m.

The winner of the People's Choice Award will be announced Thursday, July 7 on the Med City Beat. The other 11 winning projects will be announced that same day at Thursdays on First & 3rd on the 1st Avenue Stage at 12:15 p.m.

There will then be a special opportunity to meet the prototyping teams at Pitch Night on Tuesday, July 19 from 7-9 p.m. at the Rochester Art Center. In this fast-paced “pitch style” program, attendees can learn more about the inspiration behind each prototype and its interpretation of Health and the Built Environment. Attendees can also engage directly with the makers about their projects. Beverages will be available.

*Voting for the People's Choice Award is now closed.
