Farmers market moves outdoors this weekend

In one of the surest signs that summer is near, the Rochester Downtown Farmers Market is ready to move back outdoors.

The first outdoor market of the season is this Saturday. The markets continue every Saturday morning (7:30 a.m. to noon) through October at the corner of Fourth Street and Fourth Avenue SE.

The free event provides a place to visit with fellow community members, be healthy, and help promote independent family farms in Rochester and the surrounding area.

According to an email this week from organizers:

Our producers are gearing up to bring you a great variety of fresh local produce, along with flowers, bedding plants, meat, poultry, dairy products, and specialty items. New this year, Stockton Trout Farm will be bringing cleaned, fresh and smoked rainbow trout. We have a dozen new producers this summer, each adding to the uniqueness and diversity of our Market.

The market has a new manager this year. Jessica Joyce, a self-described "nerd, outdoor enthusiast and baker," took over this spring from former manager David Kotsonas, who left to take over the St. Paul farmers market.

"As Market Manager, I plan to provide all the behind-the-scenes organization required to keep the market running, and I’d love to see the marketplace continue to grow and flourish in the years to come," Joyce said in a statement.
