Carrell selected as the next chancellor of UMR

UMR didn't have to look far to find its next chancellor.

On Wednesday, University of Minnesota President Erik Kaler named Dr. Lori Carrell chancellor of the Rochester campus — making her just the second person in the 11-year history of the university to hold the title.

Carrell joined UMR in 2014 to serve as the university's vice chancellor for academic affairs and student development. In August 2017, she was named interim chancellor following the retirement of Stephen Lehmkuhle. 

“I’m delighted and honored to serve this innovative campus community,” Carrell said in a statement. “UMR’s legacy of collaboration and creativity will continue — carrying us onward toward our vision.”

In announcing the appointment, Kaler called Carrell an "enthusiastic and creative educator" who "will continue to build on UMR’s remarkable relationship with the citizens of Rochester."

"I am confident that Dr. Carrell will provide strong leadership for UMR’s unparalleled education in the health sciences, including its integrated, hands-on curriculum, personalized attention, and innovative learning experience in the dynamic Rochester community," said Kaler.

UMR serves approximately 700 undergraduate and graduate students in downtown Rochester, making it the smallest school in the University of Minnesota system. However, it has its eyes on growth. This past fall, the school welcomed its largest incoming class in history. It has also outlined future plans to expand its campus to the south end of downtown.
