A science class without the homework: That's how Adam McCaleb describes his new venture, STEAM Lab Discovery Center, which opened this week.

The business, located at 4270 Maine Avenue Southeast, offers programming for children that incorporates the five elements of a S.T.E.A.M education — science, technology, engineering, art/design and math.

McCaleb, who has spent his career working in technology, said in an interview Thursday afternoon that he hopes the business will provide a spark for the next generation of scientists, engineers and inventors.

"If kids can have fun while they learn, they're going to do this outside of the classroom," said McCaleb. "They're going to have that interest."

Upcoming programs range from a food science class on how to make farm-fresh butter to a robotics lesson that will teach kids how to make a robot out of a toothbrush. Classes are available after school and on weekends.

McCaleb said he expects to expand programming as the business gets up and running. For instance, in the summer he plans to offer classes that explore the ecosystem of a nearby pond and the habitats of monarch butterflies. STEAM Lab will also offer special group sessions, McCaleb said.

Registration for classes is available online or at the door. Parents are invited to participate in the class with their children at no additional charge.
