People's Food Co-op wins statewide award for commitment to bike friendliness

A Rochester business was recently recognized with a statewide award for helping to lead the way in multimodal transit in the Med City.

People’s Food Co-op was honored by the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota as the organization’s 2016 Bicycle Friendly Business Champion. The award honors a business that promotes biking in its community and encourages shoppers to use that mode of transportation.

“This award truly validates the work of staff, members, and our community partners in the Rochester Bicycling Coalition, who continue to advocate for both recreational and bike commuting efforts,” said Brad Smith, public and member relations manager for People’s Food Co-op, in an email to the Med City Beat.

Nominees in a variety of categories, including Advocate of the Year, Educator of the Year and Bicycle Friendly Community Champion, were evaluated by a panel of bicycle educators and advocates. Winners were announced at the MN Bike Awards in St. Paul on May 1.

People’s Food Co-op also attained a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Business Award from the League of American Bicyclists in 2015. The local grocer is one of only five businesses in Minnesota and 120 nationwide to hold this honor.

The co-op will be hosting a bike swap in its parking lot on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There's a $10 charge to sell a bike, and owners determine prices and negotiate directly with buyers. All proceeds benefit Rochester Community Bike Club - Pata De Perro, a local nonprofit that teaches youth to refurbish bikes and encourages a passion for cycling.
