Missing greyhound found dead; family thanks volunteers for extensive search

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - The citywide search for Jackson has ended.

The Italian greyhound was found dead Saturday under a woman's patio, according to a Facebook post by its owner, Jenna Macken. Jackson had been missing since Dec. 16 after getting loose from a boarding facility near John Marshall High School.

"Things did not turn out as we had prayed," said Macken. "However, we feel blessed that we were able to bring him home to rest peacefully."

Since Jackson went missing, volunteers had been posting flyers at seemingly every business and street corner in the city. On the campaign's Facebook page, concerned dog lovers shared tips and provided updates on places they've already searched.

"There are not enough words to express how thankful my family and I are to all of you who helped and stood by our side," Macken said.

Following news of Jackson's death, many of those who contributed to the search took to social media to offer their support to the Macken family.

"Had the awareness of Jackson not had been so great in our community, you still would be waking up this morning with a lost dog," wrote Shaylene Baumbach. "We have all learned so much from this family... Strength, determination and a family bond like no other. There are hundred of families shedding a tear with you today."

Final letter to Jackson:

From the very first moment we saw you, we fell in love. We miss you more than you’ll ever know... But especially: your hot body under the covers at night, telling you to stop licking the baby’s open mouth a gazillion times, the way you lean on us as we sit side by side on the couch, the way you patiently wait next to my mom’s side each morning for her to put the blow dryer on your sweet face, the way you run around the backyard in the summer with a big smile on your face, and the way you loyally cared for everyone in this family which was shown by your instinctive need to be next to us as we cry. Your absence has left a huge hole in our hearts but has also made us grateful for the many memories we have of you. You honestly were the best dog ever, little man.
