NBC special chronicles Tom Brokaw's cancer treatment at the Mayo Clinic

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - Legendary television news anchor Tom Brokaw was recently at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester filming a Dateline NBC special.

The network will first air the report, titled "Tom Brokaw: A Lucky Life Interrupted," Thursday at 9 p.m.

Brokaw will share insights from his battle with multiple myeloma, a treatable but incurable blood cancer that he was diagnosed with in 2013. Two of his physicians, Dr. Morie Gertz and Dr. Andrew Majka, were also interviewed for the report, according to Mayo Clinic's "In the Loop" blog.

Brokaw, who anchored NBC Nightly News from 1982 to 2004, told Mayo that part of his goal is to "raise the level of dialogue between the patient and physician."

He also plans to release a memoir next week chronicling his battle with the disease. The book is based on a journal he kept while receiving treatment.
