People's Food Co-op pursuing off-sale liquor license for its Rochester store
The People's Food Co-op may soon offer an assortment of beer, wine and liquor at its downtown Rochester location.
In an email sent out to members on Friday, CEO Lizzy Haywood said the co-op is currently pursuing the acquisition of a full off-sale liquor license. The goal is to have a liquor department similar to its La Crosse location — which features a mix of well-known brands plus local and organic options.
"Sometimes our interest in serving the needs of our members requires bold changes," Haywood wrote. "Now is such a time. We have listened carefully to our members who shop primarily in Rochester, who have clearly stated that the addition of wine, beer and spirits will be a great value."
The business hopes to begin offering liquor sales sometime this year following a re-design of its community room and administrative spaces. Haywood said the co-op will remain "committed to continue offering lots of fun and diverse classes and providing meeting space."
"As the population of downtown Rochester grows, we know that diversifying our product offerings will invite many new residents to our co-op, and will make our co-op an even more beloved grocery store," she said.
