Peace Plaza to host free dance and fitness classes throughout the summer
Peace Plaza will double as a dance floor this summer.
The Rochester Downtown Alliance — organizers of Thursdays on First & 3rd and SocialICE — announced plans this week to host weekly dance and fitness classes throughout the summer.
"Move on the Plaza" runs June 2 through Aug. 28. Classes (check scheduling here) will include West Coast Swing, Argentine Tango, Zumba, Barre, Pound and yoga. The series is a collaboration between the RDA, Dahl Dance Center, FireFly barre | fitness, and Zumba Fitness. And perhaps the best part: the classes are all free.
“We are a community that values the outdoors, health, and creative expression," said Karli McElroy, RDA's program manager. "Move on the Plaza provides the chance to get outside the walls of the studio, and engage both the body and mind a unique way."
Let's Play Rochester!
On a related note, the RDA and Minnesota Children’s Museum Rochester are working together on a program called "Let's Play Rochester!" According to a news release, it will initially feature three uniquely designed, large-scale sidewalk decals placed in various downtown locations. The decals will be interactive pieces of art, and will encourage play in both kids and adults.
“Let’s Play Rochester! creates an opportunity for us all to pause, and through these interactive graphics, facilitates our ability to look at our space differently and add a little creativity to our day,” said museum director Heidi Mestad.
The initiative will kick off with an event on Tuesday, May 16 at 11 a.m. outside John Kruesel’s Antique Shop on Historic Third Street.
