Sherels signs with Saints

Sherels signs with Saints

After nine seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Marcus Sherels will be wearing a different uniform next season.

The John Marshall grad has signed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints. The deal was first reported Thursday by Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer-Press and later confirmed by a source close to Sherels.

According to Tomasson, the Vikings were interested in bringing Sherels back. However, he reportedly chose the Saints “because he believes they have a good chance at winning the Super Bowl.”

Sherels, who joined the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2010, leaves Minnesota as the best punt returner in franchise history. During his time in purple, he racked up 2,447 punt return yards and five return touchdowns.

The Rochester native — who played his college ball at the University of Minnesota — had been tied with Everson Griffen as the Vikings longest-tenured player. In signing with New Orleans, Sherels will join a pair of old teammates in the Big Easy. Running back Latavius Murray and offensive lineman Nick Easton both signed with the Saints this off-season.
